The short answer

  • A night out: $3 to $8 per person per game at the centers we checked, or $23 to $50 per lane per hour, plus $3 to $5 for shoes.
  • Your own ball: about $60 for a plastic spare ball, about $88 to $99 for an entry-level reactive ball, and up to about $210 on sale for a high-performance ball.
  • Drilling: $25 to $60 at the five pro shops we checked, with inserts extra.
  • A league: $13.50 to $25 per week in our examples, plus USBC dues of $15 national and up to $5 state, plus local dues.

Prices were checked on 21 October 2026. Retail prices are sale prices and change often, so treat them as a guide to the range, not a quote.

Open bowling: a game, a lane and shoes

Centers post prices per game or per lane per hour, and most charge more on evenings and weekends. Here is what three independent centers post:

CenterWherePer gamePer lane, per hourShoesSource
Holiday LanesOklahoma City, OK$4.75 before 5 pm, $5.75 after$23 to $28$4.50prices
Sproul LanesSpringfield, PA$6 to $7 daytime$39.95 to $49.95$5.00prices
Winnetka BowlWinnetka (Los Angeles), CA$3 to $8$30 to $50$4.50 ($3 some daytimes)prices

Posted walk-in prices, 21 October 2026. The big chains (Bowlero, Round1, Main Event) price by location and don't post a national price list, so they aren't included.

For a group, compare both ways of paying. At Holiday Lanes after 5 pm, one lane for an hour costs $28, while four people bowling two games each at $5.75 a game would pay $46. How many games fit in an hour depends on the group, so this is only our arithmetic from the posted prices.

USBC notes that rental shoes "have a slide sole on both shoes," which "can make it difficult to obtain any traction." That is one reason regular bowlers buy their own.

Bowling ball prices by type

Two large bowling retailers group balls into tiers. These are their sale prices on 21 October 2026; both also show a higher "original" price next to each sale price.

Tiers are the retailers' own categories, and retailers don't always agree: bowling.com calls the Phaze II "upper mid-performance." High-performance sale prices on BowlersMart's page ran $159.95 to $209.95, against "original" prices of $249.95 to $299.95.

bowling.com's guide to cheaper performance balls says entry performance balls "regularly sell for less than $100." If you're buying your first ball, our best balls by budget guide and choosing a ball will help you pick a type, and the ball spec table compares current models.

Drilling and fitting

A new ball needs holes drilled to fit your hand. bowling.com's guide to cheaper balls puts it plainly: "Drill it up for $50 more at your pro shop." USBC says getting "the correct span, pitch and hole size" right is crucial. Five pro shops' posted prices:

Plan on extras: finger inserts cost $8 to $12.75 each and a thumb slug $8 to $20 in these lists. Plugging and redrilling a ball you already own ran $38 to $100. For what a good fit involves, see ball fit and thumb pain.

League fees and USBC dues

A league charges a weekly fee per bowler. None of the league pages we found broke down what the fee pays for. Three examples:

LeagueWhereWeekly feeSeasonSource
Kettering Health leagueDayton area, OH$18 per bowler per week (last season)13 weeksleague page
University of Colorado UMC leagueBoulder, CO$13.50 students to $18.27 public, per week9 weeksleague page
Fort Belvoir Army MWR leaguesFort Belvoir, VA (military center)$25 per person per week (expected)32 weeksleague page

In a USBC-certified league, each bowler is a USBC member. USBC's playing rules set the dues: "Standard membership dues paid annually are $15.00 National dues plus State dues up to a maximum of $5.00 and Local dues as determined by the local membership." As one example, Monmouth County USBC in New Jersey sets its local adult dues at $10. Youth members pay $4, and a league of 16 sessions or fewer can use Basic membership at $10 per league.

Adding it up

We found no trustworthy published total for "getting started," so here is our own arithmetic from the prices above, for a bowler who wants their own equipment:

  • Entry-level reactive ball: about $88 to $99
  • Drilling: $25 to $60
  • Entry shoes: about $45 to $90
  • Single-ball bag: about $50

That comes to roughly $210 to $300 before tax, at the sale prices we saw. A plastic spare ball adds about $60 to $80 plus drilling. Add a league fee and USBC dues if you join a league.
