1. Wear socks
You'll rent bowling shoes (street shoes aren't allowed — they damage the approach and ruin the slide). Bring or wear socks; nobody enjoys rental shoes barefoot.
2. Pick a ball that's comfortable, not heavy
Grab a house ball you can hold and swing without straining. A rough guide is about 10% of your body weight, but comfort wins — too heavy wrecks your aim and your shoulder. Our ball weight selector gives you a range in seconds.
3. Check the finger fit
Your thumb should slide all the way in and your two middle fingers reach the holes comfortably. If you're stretching or scrunching, try another ball. A ball that fits is easier to control and won't fly off your hand.
4. Aim at the arrows, not the pins
The pins are 60 feet away; the arrows on the lane are only about 15 feet out. It's far easier to hit a close target. Pick an arrow and roll over it. More on this in our how to bowl guide.
5. Keep your swing relaxed
Let your arm swing like a pendulum — gravity does the work. Muscling or chucking the ball kills accuracy. Smooth and relaxed beats hard and wild every time.
6. Don't fling it in the air
Roll the ball off your hand close to the lane; don't loft it out and let it crash down. A smooth roll travels straight and protects the lane.
7. Mind the bowler next to you
If someone on the next lane is about to bowl, let them go first. Two people swinging side by side is distracting and a little dangerous. A bit of courtesy keeps the night fun — see lane etiquette.
8. Keep drinks off the approach
The approach has to stay dry. One spilled drop creates a slick spot that can cause a nasty fall mid-slide. Keep food and drinks back at the seating area.
9. Bumpers aren't cheating
Bowling with kids or total beginners? Ask for bumpers. There's zero shame in it — the point is to have fun and knock pins down. You can graduate to the open lane whenever you're ready.
10. Don't stress the score
Strikes and spares can wait. Focus on a relaxed, repeatable roll and the score takes care of itself. If you're curious how it all adds up, our scoring guide makes it click.
